Il successo / The success

Sono cresciuta con l’idea che il successo sia in qualche modo legato solo al denaro e alla fama, esattamente come ci viene continuamente propinato dai mass- media.

Quindi raggiungerlo, significa possedere macchine e gioielli costosi, vivere in ville lussuose, andare in televisione, essere riconosciuti per strada.

Poi ho incontrato Mariasole, una signora di umili origini che vive in un paesino ai piedi delle Alpi e grazie a lei, ho capito che cosa significa veramente avere successo.

Tutte le mattine da più di cinquant’anni, questa donna percorre un lungo tragitto a piedi per andare ad accudire le sue pecore. Osserva la natura che la circonda e la vede mutare con il passare delle stagioni. Saprebbe riconoscere ogni centimetro di quella terra calpestata, ma anche ogni suo rumore e tutto questo la rende felice.

Le ho chiesto se, in cambio di denaro e fama, avesse rinunciato alle sue pecore ed ella mi ha risposto che nulla valeva quanto ciò che già possedeva e ha aggiunto:

«Mio padre mi diceva che avrei avuto successo nella vita, se avessi capito chi ero e cosa volevo fare. Poi una volta raggiunto questo obiettivo, avrei dovuto perseguire la mia strada senza timore, condividendo la mia gioia con gli altri.»

«E l’ha fatto?»

«Certo! Io oggi sono esattamente chi volevo essere e sono orgogliosa del mio percorso. Come vedi, non posseggo niente di lussuoso, però non mi manca nulla e anch’io ho la mia dose di notorietà. Dicono che sono una vecchia pazza!» Esclama ridendo e continua «Beeeeee… come dargli torto.»

I grew up with the idea that success is somehow linked only to money and fame, exactly as it’s continually fed to us by the mass media.

So reaching it means owning expensive cars and jewels, living in luxurious villas, going on television, and being recognized on the street.

Then I met Mariasole, a lady of humble origins who lives in a village at the foot of the Alps, and thanks to her, I understood what it means to be successful.

Every morning for more than fifty years, this woman has traveled a long way on foot to go and look after her sheep. She observes the nature that surrounds her and sees it change with the passing of the seasons. She would be able to recognize every inch of that trampled earth, but also every sound of her and all this makes her happy.

I asked her if, in exchange for money and fame, she had given up her sheep and she replied that nothing was as good as what she already owned and added:

«My father told me that I would be successful in life if I understood who I was and what I wanted to do. Then once this goal was achieved, I should have pursued my path without fear, sharing my joy with others.»

«And did you do it?»

«Of course! Today I’m exactly who I wanted to be and I’m proud of my path. As you can see, I don’t own anything luxurious, but I don’t lack anything and I too have my share of notoriety. They say I’m a crazy old woman!» She exclaims laughing and continues «hmmbeee… how to blame him.»
